If your fiscal year ends in June or December, now is the time to make smart use of unspent capital funds. For telecom providers, industrial and commercial facility managers, and regional store operators, the final stretch of a fiscal year is a prime opportunity to knock out high-impact sitework projects that don’t require lengthy permitting or design. These jobs are fast, effective, and budget-appropriate.
Here are sitework projects that often can be completed quickly, support long-term infrastructure goals, and/or help meet fiscal year budget timelines without waste.
1. Grading, Vegetation & Stormwater Fixes
Water that doesn’t drain where it should isn’t only an eyesore, it’s a liability and a threat to your long-term assets. Low spots, reverse slopes, ponding near utility infrastructure, and erosion along drive areas can cause structural issues and safety hazards. Finish grading with proper slope to ensure water drains away from foundations, sidewalks, assets, and paved surfaces.
But drainage correction doesn’t stop at the original grading. Unvegetated or unstable zones can lead to sediment transport, clogged inlets, and headaches. Stabilizing these areas with topsoil placement, turf mat installation, or seeding is a cost-effective way to restore performance and keep runoff under control.
Stormwater infrastructure like detention basins, swales, and inlets can degrade gradually until they fail during a storm and commonly cost more to repair.
Year-end CAPEX is a great time to:
- Desilt low points or regrade basin floors
- Reset rip rap or realign outlet protection
- Regrade basin edges, reinforce swales, or reseed areas with erosion loss
These fixes typically don’t require extensive design or permits — just experienced fieldwork done at the right time.

2. Access Roads, Staging Areas & Aggregate Surfaces
Aggregate access roads and lanes, storage yards, utility access points, or even dumpster pads often experience washing, undermining, erosion, or rock displacement. It’s the nature of the beast. Rebuilding, recontouring, and compacting these surfaces with the right base layer and maybe geotextile fabric, in conditions that need a little extra help — and with drainage in mind, can extend the life of your investment and reduce future maintenance calls. These projects fit neatly into CAPEX frameworks, especially when paired with culvert cleanouts, ditching, and of course, revegetation.
Other scope items to consider:
- Bollard resets or installs
- Snow Plow Damage
- ADA features or rumble strips
3. Concrete or Pavement Spot Repairs
When small sections of pavement or concrete fail — whether from settlement, poor subgrade prep, or seasonal stress — they don’t usually warrant a full repave. However, they still present liability risks and operational slowdowns. End-of-fiscal-year CAPEX is a great time to knock out spot repairs such as concrete aprons, drainage areas, trip hazards, or pothole remediation. These fixes stabilize your investment and restore day-to-day functionality.
We’re Built for Quick Turnaround — and Long-Term Value
At Reiss Earthworks, we’re familiar with tight windows and shutdown schedules. We can plan around store hours, facility access needs, and weather constraints — so you’ll stay operational while site issues are fixed the right way.
If we’ve worked together before- great! We should already be in your system as an approved vendor. If not, let’s get started. We can expedite onboarding and provide documentation, before/after photos, and closeout summaries to support your internal CAPEX reporting.
